Jonah 2 (guest blogger Sean)

July 1st, 2009 · No Comments

What hit me most this morning as I read in Chapter 2 of Jonah was when Jonah said in his prayer, “I remembered you, Lord”. And yet, I get a sense from earlier in his prayer that God is ALWAYS listening. When Jonah called, God answered him. When he called for help, God listened to his cry. Our God, not a false god we humans have created, is always AWARE of us. He doesn’t sleep or slumber and unlike those false gods and worthless idols, God is offering us grace and forgiveness and desires a personal relationship with us.

Can you imagine “forgetting” God? It is as if Jonah, a prophet of God, was sinking and focusing on his final resting place when he thought, “Oh yeah, I worship the LORD, maybe I should call on Him for help!” Maybe Jonah hadn’t truly forgotten God but maybe his focus was so much on himself, ever since he began to run from God toward Tarshish, that it was like he did forget Him.

God, I can easily “forget” you on any given day. One moment I can have incredible closeness with you and the next moment I am so focused on my day, my stuff, that it is as if I never knew you. God, help me to understand that you are here with me, you listen for me and desire for me to involve you in every moment of my life. Like Jonah, I thank you for rescuing me and offering me grace that is indescribable.
