Jonah 3 Again

June 18th, 2009 · No Comments

Jonah 3:5 The Ninevites believed God.

Who would have guessed that the Ninevites would have believed God? They were the least likely to be receptive to the truth. Nineveh was city possessed with power, wealth and all the vices accompanied by a large urban center. It would be like going to downtown New York and standing on the street corner shout “God loves you and wants you to move toward Him!” How would you expect that strategy to work? NOT!

My human presumptions about who will or will not respond to truth is soiled at best. And often times I let my presumptions about the way people respond determine whether I will be obedient to deliver the truth or not.

Do I tell my wife this or that, do I mention something to one of my children, do I talk with my boss or co-worker? That is real prophetic work, simply speaking the truth in love. So much of my anger and resentment comes from “letting things go” which is really another word for stuffing them down.

In a world of tolerant, confront seems like a harsh word but that is what truth does, confront. If truth is truth then that which is not consistent with it is wrong. Father why is it that in my mind I do believe in absolute truth but in the way I live I am more bound to comfort than truth. I am unwilling to ask questions that might lead to dangerous conversations. And that is fuel cowardly by my presumption that they won’t received this well.

Father my compass needs recalibration. I veer so quickly to comfort and rather than the sound of your voice and the touch of your Spirit. Father, the twistedness of my brain sometimes amazes me. How can I see so clearly out of one side of it and be so blind in the other. Father I ask that you center my soul in your love and ground me to to your truth so that I can hear and obey as you call.
