I spoke on the fear of poverty this morning and suggested that the antidote to the fear of poverty was generosity. I challenged people pretty hard to stop taking an exacto knife to the teachings of Jesus and removing all he said about wealth management.
Got this today!
… have been coming to Shoal Creek since Easter. This week when the subject of money came up they kind of looked at each other and said “Here we go…just waiting to see how long it would take for this subject to come up.” Fully expecting that they would be asked to hand over 10% – or more – they were surprised by the direction the message took. The really cool part is that they spent the rest of the afternoon talking about their financial situation – really talking about it. Not just “how much is in the checking account?” but what it really means to think of anything as being ours to start with. Rather than being scared off by a church demanding they hand over their wallets (although, they understand that it takes money to do what they do) they found themselves focused around the relationship between their heads and their hearts when it comes to their finances.
Wonder if this was the typical response?
