That’s mind-blowing stuff. I don’t even really know how to respond…it creates a knot inside of me. Fear? Trepidation? Exhaustion? Old at the age of 39? The question that comes to mind is: what does this mean to the body of Christ? How are we to engage the world within this exponential age?
I think that this shows the importance of structure in our life. When I say structure I really mean a strategy.
If we do not live a strategic life, our life will collapse under its own weight. All aspects of our life must conform to a low maintenance life style.
I have been in the computer field for over 20 years. I for many years I was able to stay abreast of the changes in most aspects of technology or at least the technology that effected my life. I did this by working 12 hour days and reading technical manuals all night. I determined early on that technical manuals were most efficiently read backward. This way you get the big picture first, so you know what details are most important to you as you move toward the beginning. Before long there was not enough time in the day to cover all the technology that effected my life. I started to restrict the information that I consumed. Thus causing me to become more specialized. Then the Internet became prevalent giving me more access to more and more data, in more and more formats. I was able to view a web-ex while on a conference call and reading a manual.
Roy what did you say in your blog about Christians needing to access less truth more deeply. Even I was not able to give the appropriate amount of cycles to any of these tasks. However by keeping my work life strategically aligned, I was able to maintain the appearance of knowing about all things technical. This allowed me to maintain my position as “Principle Business Technology Consultant”. I had a friend that actually subscribed to a hard copy book of buzzwords published monthly.
I worked for a Trading and Marketing company. This type of company has little physical. It is mostly just data. Part of my responsibility was to make sure that the large piles of data were useful. Large piles of data quickly become garbage if not maintained in a fashion that allows the consumer to access the data they require without much effort. The amount of data was staggering and increased about 200% each year.
You see I was juggling my work life really well. I had excelled in my career. I always prided myself on seeing the big picture and taking the holistic approach to every challenge.
Have you noticed how many times I have mentioned God, Jesus, religion, or family. OK, so I did not see the big picture and did not implement a holistic approach to anything. I did not understand that by taking the load squarely upon my self, I was leaving out the most important step.
I am sure that it goes without saying that my personal life became a nightmare. It was on the rocks. Life was all of a sudden going in all different directions. For the first time in my life, I realized that I was not in control.
I will not go into detail, but I have to thank my wife for bringing me to Christ. Three years after I started reading the bible, I started listening to our Heavenly Father. I have been trying to spend an hour each day of quite time with the Lord. When I follow through with it, and let him guide me, my life seems to go smoothly and without much regret. But when I take that time back into my control and use it to try and control my life things like regret start to find their way back into my life.
What doe’s this mean?
It is trying to drive home the point that we can’t do it all. We can’t know what will happen in the future. And as hard as we might try we can’t control everything. If you think you can you are in for a big surprise.
I did say this was life according to Steve right?
A low maintenance life strategy is simple consult the Lord daily and at every unexpected turn of events. Corporate America is not fond of delegating up. But our Lord seems to be fine with the idea. If you give your worries to the Lord, and you are still trying to manage them someone is wasting their time.
This is not “Life according to Steve”, it is life according to our Lord.
Three years ago I would have read this and thought what a bunch of “Whoee” !
Wow! Sounds like quite a story. I know the feeling of being overwhelmed by technology. I took two weeks off from reading my blogs and had some many entries when I came back that I almost had an anxiety attachk.
