Yesterday I played the first two holes of Golf as if I was going to change my profession, par, par. Then Roy showed up, double, double. I had trouble breaking 90, ouch! But I was with my oldest Son and the weather was gorgeous.

Then my wife decided on a picnic and the whole tribe came. Not just our 6 but a host of others. So the ten of us ended up at Bennett Park. After eating too much I began to lay in the sun and bask in the golden warmth of the day. THEN, my kids decided it was time to play Ultimate Frisbee. I didn’t want to play, I wanted to lay and rest! They insisted and the guilt of being a good father overrode my desire to rest.

For the next two hours I ran like I haven’t run in awhile but strangely enough I loved it. Frolicking through a field bumping maybe hitting people with my old body. It was quite fun.

Why is it that when coerced into doing something I didn’t want to do, I love it. It makes me wonder how much I’m missing. Rarely do I act counter intuitively. I usually do what I want rather than what I don’t want. Yet Yesterday in doing what I didn’t want I had a wonderful time.

Could the answer to my search for a satisfying life actually lie in doing what I don’t want? Could that be what the Apostle Paul means in his 7th Chapter of the Epistle of Romans when he says that which he doesn’t want to do he does and that which he wants to do he doesn’t. Could he be encouraging a life that is counter intuitive so that I would find the greatest sense of meaning and purpose and satisfaction in that which I DIDN’T want to do! Wow! I am going to try to be alive to this thought on a regular basis.
