Weekly Update

May 8, 2011
As the camp proceeded, though, we noticed that through passionate soccer games, dance parties, and incredible teaching from the Shoal Creek group, the kids began to play and laugh together. The shyness evaporated as the kids began to see that they weren’t so different from each other and that maybe, just maybe, this new friend that they had made might be able to understand them in a really deep way.”  From the staff of Mission Adelante

  1. Mission Adelante Week Planning THIS coming Sunday – 12:30pm Attic – Every summer we do a kids camp for Mission Adelante and the Hispanic families that live there in KCK. What you read above is a snipit of what’s going to go on June 20-23rd. We need LOTS OF HELP, starting with the planning meeting this Sunday.
  2. KC Mission Trip – Want a more immersive cross-cultural experience for your teen? If I can get 8 more students to sign up for June 20-23rd, we will do a 4 day 3 night “mission trip” during the Mission Adelante Kids Camp week, spending the nights, serving during the days and evenings. $50/students (covers rooms and food). So far I have only 4 signed up, I need 8 more to make this happen or we not be able to make it happen. Deadline to sign up Sunday May 29.
  3. New Parents Meeting Sunday May 22nd – NO BUYA, ATTIC NOT OPEN. – If you know a parent of a 5th grader that will be graduating up into Buya this summer, forward this to them. Elevate Weekly Update

May 1, 2011

Hey Everyone, here’s what’s up!

1. Sunday May 15th – 12:30-2:00pm – Mission Adelante focused Waypoint and “KC Mission Trip” – It’s time again to start prepping for our annual week of serving the Hispanic families of Mission Adelante. We’re going to put on another STELLAR week of kids camp, and we want you and your student to see this as an amazing opportunity to serve together and give some of your time, energy, and heart to a population of families with unique needs right here, 20 minutes away from Shoal Creek. We need:
  • 20-25 total adults, divided up over the course of 4 nights, Mon June 20-23 (so about 6-8 adults taking one night a piece)
  • 15-20 students/night, to interact, serve, and lead the children of Mission Adelante in childrens songs, skits, crafts, and games.
  • 12 students who want to spend the night on a first ever, more immersion experience we’re going to call ”KC Mission Trip”. We have worked it out to be able to spend the nights a dormitory (Sanctuary of Hope), which is 2 minutes away from Mission Adelante. We will spend Mon-Wed night at Sanctuary of Hope, spend the mornings serving either Mission Adelante or Hillcrest Transitional Housing, and spend the evenings with the other Shoal Creek Students with the Mission Adelante Kids Camp. Cost for the 4 days/3 nights, including all housing and food, is looking to be about $50/student.
  • PLEASE RSVP to the Planning Waypoint on May 15th, so I can plan ahead for how we can split up into equal teams. If you’re student is interested in this very unique meaningful KC Mission Trip, please let me know ASAP because 12 total spots is not a lot and I need to set up our service projects quickly.
2. Sunday May 22nd – Parent Meetings in the Attic at 10am and 11am – No BUYA or CRASH either service – These meetings are primarily for families yet unfamiliar with Buya and Crash and would benefit from understanding what we offer and why we offer it. We’d especially like to invite the new 5th/6th grade parents who are moving a child up from Kidzone for the first time. Please forward this bit of information to any 5th grade families you now, as I most likely do not have them into my communication chain yet.
3. Crash Hangout Friday May 13th – Detials TBA – Henry and Lindsay Williams, our newest Crash Leaders, are going to be putting on some more informal Crash Hangouts to give the students more time to just hangout and have fun together, no programming, just building friendships. These will be great to get new, unconnected students involved in. This is the first, so save the date and details to come.

Hey Everyone, one really BIG announcement about the Vamos Trip, and a couple other items:

1. VAMOS ROAD TRIP – An Opportunity to Connect the Unconnected – Right now we are half full on our trip. Almost all of which are students that are already connected to Shoal Creek. I LOVE that we get this time with them, but this Vamos trip is IDEAL for YOUR son or daughter to get just ONE friend to Shoal Creek to come. If each student signed up just brought ONE friend, HALF our trip would be students that could potentially find their home at Shoal Creek. Please work with your son or daughter to help them find that friend they could invite, because this trip is about creating an community that is attractive to those still not connected to God. Attached are the forms, and here is the link for online registration: www.shoalcreek.org/vamos. Here are three videos to help share and promote:
