Jesus Calms the Storm

Group Discussion Questions

Scripture: Mark 4:35-41

35 As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.”

36 So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed). 37 But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water.

38 Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”

39 When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. 40 Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

41 The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!”

Section One

  1. Have any of you ever gone on a boat? How did you feel about being so far away from the shore?
  1. Kurt mentioned that one of the scariest things he can think of is being out in a boat when something goes wrong. Share a situation that scares you to think about…not a real-life story, but one that you HOPE never happens!
  1. Share a real-life scary situation you found yourself in.

Section Two

  1. The Bible is full of amazing stories. Take a minute to think about your favorite Bible story.
  1. Have everybody in the group spend a few minutes thinking about their favorite Bible story and looking it up to refresh their memory. Even though these stories happened thousands of years ago, they still apply to our lives today. Does anybody want to try to share how your favorite Bible story can still apply to our lives today?
  1. Back to Kurt’s story: The disciples felt as though Jesus wasn’t aware or concerned about their situation. What did they say to Jesus?
  1. How did Jesus respond to this situation?
  1. Jesus was able to calm the storm with three simple words. “Quiet! Be still!” What happened when He spoke these words?
  1. According to verse 41, how did the disciples react when they realized how powerful Jesus was?
  1. The disciples were experienced fishermen, so this was not the first time they had faced a storm on the sea. But this storm was so powerful that they panicked. What “storms” have you faced in your life that have caused you to panic?

Section Three

  1. Jesus doesn’t promise a life without storms, but He does promise to be with us in the middle of the storms. Why is it so tough to rely on God when we face tough times?
  1. The disciples had underestimated the power of Jesus. Once they turned to Him, Jesus immediately calmed the storm. God wants to be the calmer of our storms as well. How should we react when we see a storm coming our way?

Personal Challenge

After watching the DVD and discussing it together, talk about our need to trust God during the “storms” of life. We have two options when we face hard times: We can panic and worry, assuming that God doesn’t care, or we can rely on God and trust that He will take care of us. The next time you feel scared or anxious, how are you going to respond?
