1.) Below is the announcement I’m putting in the SC eNews for the next couple of weeks.

Elevate Students Invite You to Missional Workday
The Elevate student ministry is serving Mission Adelante, a Hispanic outreach organization in Kansas City, KS, on Saturday, March 14th from 8:30-3:00. The students will meet at the SC building, then be driving to Mission Adelante’s newly acquired building for a day of remodeling. The youth of Shoal Creek are challenging the adults of Shoal Creek to come make a difference by working side by side with them. Anybody is welcomed, but there is an extra need for workers with construction, framing, and wiring skills. RSVP with Justin Talley so he can plan on how many projects we can kick butt on!

If you are going to be a part of this outreach day, please plan on attending a 20 minute informational meeting on Sunday March 8th, right after second service in the Underground, to cover workday preparation and find out what you need to wear, bring, who’s driving, etc. Parents with students (6th-12th) are invited. I’d love for any parents who can make it to think about coming to. I think things like this give parents a different way to try and relate to there child and can strengthen that bond by working side by side.

2.) Paint Day Saturday February 28th, 9:00-1:00
I’m going to be hosting a painting half-day to try to get the Willy Wonka Hall ready to go for our Buya AM Sunday morning small groups, so I’d love any students who have availability to come join me. I’ll provide lunch if you provide breakfast. I’d love to have as many students that can make it come so we can bust out the hallway and a couple of rooms, but, if you’re family has to make a choice between the Paint Day and the Mission Adelante Workday, I’d rather you pick the Mission Adelante Workday.

RSVP back to me about the Paint Day if your student can make it.

Thanks!
Justin

Announcements

February 17, 2009

Valentine’s Dance was a HUGE success! First of all, THANKS to everybody that participated whether you were a volunteer, donator, silent auction service provider. It was all amazing to see how everything turned out. Tons of people were there, and everybody had fun. We raised a total of $1546!!! Wow! Awesome! So, big thanks again everybody for helping out!

Coming up in the nearer future – Mission Adelante/Elevate Students Workday – Saturday March 14th

We are probably having a Missional Adelante (follow for more on the organization) prep meeting Sunday March 8th right after second service. Location TBA. All our youth will be invited to go down Mission Adelante on Saturday, March 14th, to participate in remodeling their newly acquired, really old building. We’re also going to challenge the adult community at Shoal Creek to come with our youth and help get some walls painted, sheet rock up, etc.

So, the Prep Meeting will largely focus on splitting up into teams, knowing what jobs you are assigned for the day, and going over the logistics of traveling down there. So please pencil in Sunday March 8th, right after second service for a prep meeting (lasting an hour), and write in INK Saturday, March 14th, Mission Adelante/Elevate Student Remodeling day. This is the first coordination of what is potentially going to be a long-lasting relationship between our students and the Hispanic Community in KCK.

I think that’s all I have for now!

Justin Talley

(PS – email or call me if you want more info about Mission Adelante, I’ve talked and met with the director several times and would love to share my enthusiasm for their organization with you!)

Parenting Adolescents Event

February 12, 2009

Our good friends at Youthfront are hosting an event on Thrusday, March 19th, at 6:00pm down in Shawnee Mission, KS.

Here’s a quote from the event webpage:  “The evening will feature a Parent Resource Fair showcasing area organizations, churches, and agencies that are ready to serve your family.  In addition, nationally known author, speaker, radio host, and parent of three grown daughters, Dr. Jim Burns of HomeWord will share very practical ways to bring a sense of AWE (Affirmation, Warmth, Encouragement) into our homes.”

Go to the event website, http://www.youthfront.com/Engage, for all the detials, but cost is only $15 for what looks like could be a pretty useful night.
