Search Institute’s 40 Development Assets in Adolescence
September 29, 2008
The Search Institute is arguably one of the most well-versed experts in determining what it is that our adolescents actually need. In that pursuit, they have come up with their list of 40 assets that directly correlate to the wholeness and health of our youth.
Click on the link to visit an interactive webpage that will give you the list, plus ways to incorporate specific activities for each asset into the life of your family. The Fuller Seminary Youth Institue suggests in their book Deep Ministry in a Shallow World that “Although there is no magic number of assets that guarantees kids will thrive, Search hints that 31 assets is a common benchmark that divides kids who do well from those who struggle. Only nine percent of the youth they’ve surveyed (roughly two million youth since 1989) have 31 or more assets.”
Click on the 40 Assets link to see where your family might fall in that spectrum.

I’m personally subscribed to each of the blogs and visit each site regularly, and I encourage you, the parents, to do the same!
Crash Fusion Sunday Night
September 26, 2008
Since this the the 4th Sunday night of the month, Crash will be having Fusion at the Backs home (1513 Canterbury Lane) from 6:30-8:30.
We’re going to do tacos for dinner, so you can email me (justin.talley@shoalcreek.org) to sign up to bring something, but it doesn’t cost anything to come and eat.
We’re also going to be working our way through some of the things Jesus did and said and discuss the relevance of it to our lives.
For questions, call Justin Talley (816-510-3859).

MTV is coming out with a new TV show next week entitled Sex…with Mom and Dad. This show is set to try to get parents and students to break down communication barriers about, well, you know what. This is not a show I’m endorsing, primarily because of it’s MTV world-view, which is sure to not be a Christian view on Sex. I just think parents need to be aware of what’s out there and what students have access to on TV. This show is sure to create a buzz in the teen world.
